Finally Friday! Weekly Recap

I am writing this post on my iPhone in Rochester, New York, so please excuse my brevity. This week was huge. I met with a lawyer, drafted my Articles of Incorporation, and sent my board requests. Hopefully, my next update will include a completed board of directors!

On the thesis front, I met with my adviser and she has changed the study once again. As of now, my academic work will focus on market analysis rather than individual experience. I want those that have donated to know that no matter how many times my study is revised, their contributions will be completely devoted to the original mission- bringing grieving children to Disney. I have hit a few road blocks at UCF, but the heart of this project will be realized through the foundation of my 501c3.

Lawyers and Articles

I had an appointment with a lawyer on Monday morning. He reviewed my bylaws and my articles of incorporation and gave some great advice! Since then I have been working to assemble my board and complete my articles. I had thought that I would be able to file the same day, but according to the lawyer it is much better to have the board in place before your file with the state.

On the thesis front, I am still trying to wade through the feedback left by my adviser. While I think I understand what she’s trying to suggest, much of the feedback contradicts what was told to me earlier in the semester. I have an appointment to speak with her over the tomorrow morning, and I hope that much of the confusion will be cleared up at that time.

Remember that “Call Me Maybe” lip sync video I mentioned a few weeks ago? Well, it looks like this may go forward sometime in late November or early December. (For those that didn’t read the post in question – I’d like to create an upbeat lip sync video to bring more people to the site – “Call Me Maybe” is, or at least was, an incredibly popular song and many groups have created lip sync videos featuring it. Well, I’d love to create one of these videos at Walt Disney World – specifically in the new Fantasyland section of the park. Due to a few suggestions, we may use a different song, but the concept will remain the same.

Happy Halloween!

Finally Friday! Weekly Recap

My thesis committee sent their feedback from my rough draft yesterday. It looks like I will need to make some changes to my study design once again, but at least this time it won’t be quite so technical. The committee is uncomfortable with how clinical the study has become, so I will instead be writing about a program design and providing the experience to a few isolated families to demonstrate the proposed design.

While I wish I hadn’t spent so much time developing a design that was never going to be used, I am actually more comfortable with this format. I can still provide the experience to a few families and record their reactions, but I do not have to pry into their private and personal lives. Since I really just wanted a few heart warming experiences to include in grant applications and promotional material for my future nonprofit, this format is just fine with me.

On the subject of a future nonprofit, I will incorporating next week! Oh, did I not mention? I’ve been working on business plan, organizational structure/job descriptions, and bylaws for a nonprofit while working on my thesis. I have an appointment with a lawyer on Monday morning, and I will be mailing my Articles of Incorporation immediately afterwards. As soon as I have my EIN, I’ll post more information.

Other updates are fairly minimal. I will need to flesh out my literature review a bit more before defending my proposal in mid-November. I completed a bit more research this week including an article that linked smiling and laughing with less negative emotion during grief. The most fascinating part: smiling has no effect on grief unless it is a “Duchenne” smile – or a smile that engages the muscles around the eyes and mouth as opposed to just the mouth. Basically, smiling will only have a positive effect on one’s grief if it is a genuine smile as opposed to a forced one.

Page Update: The Study

“The Study” page (you can find it in the navigation bar at the top of the page) has been updated to reflect the current research design. Check it out, and feel free to respond with any constructive criticism or helpful wisdom you would like to impart.

On that note…

My IRB application is finally complete! Everything has been revised multiple times, and it is all waiting for my advisor’s signature before the approval process can begin!

Finally Friday! Weekly Recap

It’s been another productive and busy week. I submitted my proposal rough draft to my committee on Monday, and I am hoping to hear some feedback from my professors by the end of the day. Either way, I will be submitting my IRB application over the weekend.

What else happened this week?

-Completed my human research protocol
-Confirmed with New Hope for Kids that they will identify all families
-Designed a rough draft of my informational brochure to be distributed to potential families
-Submitted rough draft to committee
-Revised interview questions and family profile
-Completed CITI training
-7 Twitter followers
-4 Blog likes

Writing my human research protocol was an interesting and time-consuming process! I have never written anything like that before, so thank goodness UCF provides a template! Even with the template, it took four hours to write.

10)      Provisions to protect the privacy interests of participants

Participants may be worried that their contact information will be given to other individuals or outside organizations. They may also worry that identifying information will be given in the final report, and their personal thoughts and feelings may be recognized by a future reader.

The participant’s anonymity, privacy, and comfort are of the utmost concern. In order to protect the privacy of the participants, only essential personal information will be gathered. The caregiver’s name, mailing address, and phone number are necessary to the completion of the study; they will not be disclosed to anyone but the primary investigator. Certain demographic information such as race, gender, and age may also be acquired in order to properly analyze and report the data. This data will be included in the final report, but pseudonyms will be used to protect confidentiality. No children’s names shall be given to the primary investigator or any other individual working on the study. No names, addresses, or contact information will be included in the final report or given to other individuals or organizations. All of this information will be clearly communicated to participants in the informed consent form, and participants may contact the primary investigator at any time to discuss confidentiality concerns.

Yesterday’s Promised Update

As previously mentioned, the study has gone through some drastic changes. The first step for the participating families will now be to fill out a Family Profile that will include questions about their background, the loss, and the children’s interests. The surviving caregiver will fill this out prior to receiving their Disney tickets.

Here are some of the questions from the profile:

What kinds of treatment has your child received since the death? Please check all that apply.

1.__ individual counseling

2.__ group therapy

3.__ New Hope for Kids

4.__School guidance counselor

5.__ Summer camp for bereaved children

6.__ Other: Please specify_________________

Is your child spending time with their friends?

1.__Yes, there has been no change since the loss.

2.__Yes, but they are spending less time with friends than before the loss.

3.__No, they avoided spending time with their friends since the loss.

4.__No, but they never spent time with friends before the loss.

Your family was chosen to participate in this study because the opposite parental figure has died. How long ago did the death occur?_______________________

The data gleaned from the family profile will be summarized in the final report and used to compare the families’ reactions to the theme park visit.

I will need to verbally defend my proposal in a month in front of my thesis committee. Until then, I expect to be making constant revisions and continuing to wade through my IRB application and CITI training (Wow, that’s time consuming!-Interesting though)

I’m running out of time now, but there’s so much more to tell. I will update again very soon.

It’s been awhile…

I know, I know. It’s been awhile since I’ve posted. It’s been a crazy few weeks. I’ve been crazily working on my proposal rough draft (it’s due tomorrow), and I spent some time with my family at Yellowstone National Park. I’ve missed a couple Finally Friday updates, and so much has changed! I’ll need to add the updates slowly, as it is WAY too much to include in one post.

One of the largest changes is my research design. There’s no control group anymore, and I will only be able to provide the families with one day of tickets. The research tools I will be using have also completely changed. Instead of surveys I will be conducting two telephone interviews: one immediately after the Disney trip and another four weeks later. In addition, I will now be gathering information from only the primary caregiver and not the children.

All of these changes were made after hearing suggestions from my thesis committee. One of the great benefits of these changes is that it significantly reduces the funds needed to complete the study. Instead of almost $12,000, I now only need to raise a little over $3,000. This is much more achievable!

More updates tomorrow along with some excerpts from my proposal…
